The Top 3 Posture Myths Busted

Posture is not a new concept; it has been around as long as humans have. Our posture is always with us and carries us through our lives. Posture is commonly taken for granted, so much so that some people don’t realize how vitally important posture is to our health, human function, and longevity.

In fact, there are certain myths that have shaped why some people have misconceptions about “Posture.” By busting these myths right here and right how, you will learn why these myths are complete misconceptions and how to overcome them. You will discover why patients are interested in posture and how you can use postural education to your advantage to grow your practice.

Myth #1: Posture is only about how you look
This myth has some truth to it in the sense that posture does have a positive affect on how you look. However, proper posture is not just skin deep, there is more to it than that. The postural design of your body represents how you interact with your environment on a daily basis.

Misaligned posture is directly associated with common diseases and physiologic effects that our society presents with. Did you know that your posture could be the cause of your headaches, fatigue, back pain, and poor respiration?

With a properly aligned posture there is less tension on the muscles, soft tissues, bony skeleton, and internal organs, allowing the body to function in its optimal state. Posture is certainly not just about how you look, it’s all also about how you function and how you feel.

Did you know that your posture impacts your emotions? That people with proper posture are more confident, productive, powerful, and have a more positive self-image. Humans presenting with a weak postural framework are more commonly depressed, have diffuse pain throughout their body, are shy, timid, and demonstrate higher levels of fatigue and lethargy.

Myth #2: Posture is Boring
Again, there is slight truth to this myth… if you present posture in a boring way. When explained in a way that relates to the patient and the patients’ needs are addressed, they will not only be interested they will be intrigued. Trust me, it happens everyday at the American Posture Institute.

Posture is something that patients already agree with, and when it is brought to their attention in an interesting way, you will see your patients nodding in agreement. What won’t work however, is a boring old video telling them to stand up straight. They have heard this boring advice before. Show them the importance, give them relevant examples, and provide them with implementable posture advice.

You can easily do this with Posture Workshops in your office, or by doing community outreach through the Corporate Posture Program. Host informational sessions where you teach posture in an interesting way.

For example, host a workshop called “Design Your Workspace” and show your patients, or corporations how to design their workspace for optimal efficiency. Show them that they will be happier, healthier, and more productive at work, and you have just created lifelong patients that are interested in posture!

Myth #3: Patients don’t actually do their posture exercises at home
This actually has a lot more to do with you, the healthcare practitioner, than it does your patient. If you give your patients an old school black and white print off of a few generic stretches to do, they are going to crumple it up the second they walk out the door.

These doctors will prove themselves right that patients don’t commit to rehabilitation. But you, you are better than this! Don’t be generic with your recommendations, practice 100% clinical precision and know with certainty that your patients will benefit from your recommendations. When you give patients new recommendations that they haven’t heard from 4 other healthcare professionals before coming into your office, then your patients will be committed.

At the American Posture Institute we recommend combining multiple rehabilitation strategies so your patients get the best results possible. Yes have them do exercises, but have them do exercises while utilizing Vibration Therapy. Posture exercises on a whole body vibration plate will render results 4x faster than traditional rehabilitation protocols.

Plus, at home your patients can perform exercises with a JBit Medpro, a new rehabilitation device that helps improve extensor posture, and patients love it!

The top three posture myths have been debunked! Start educating your patients about posture and discover the high value return you will receive for the investment of your time to properly educate your patients. Patients understand posture, use this to your advantage and reap the benefits of having a practice full of committed patients.
